Civil War Alexandria Tour Overview
In 1863, a correspondent for the New York Herald lamented, “Many hamlets and towns have been destroyed during the war. But of all that in some form survive, Alexandria has most suffered.” This observation underscores the profound transformation Alexandria underwent during the Civil War as it became a strategic military hub for Union forces after being occupied for twenty-two months.
The tour invites participants to delve into the complex history of Alexandria, once the hometown of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee and a locality that witnessed an influx of African Americans seeking freedom within Union lines. Visitors can explore a diverse range of sites, including Union forts, Confederate memorials, and museums focused on African American history. More than two dozen distinctive landmarks illustrate how Alexandria’s role as an occupied city shaped its unique Civil War narrative, setting it apart from other towns in America. Today, this history seamlessly integrates with Alexandria's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
This interactive tour experience features historic photographs of each landmark, curated by the City of Alexandria’s Office of Historic Alexandria. Participants have the flexibility to choose their own routes or follow a recommended path that showcases significant historical sites, museums, and local dining and shopping options. Each stop provides narrated stories and utilizes a GPS-enabled map for easy navigation.
Please note: Prolonged use of GPS in the background may significantly decrease battery life.
